學生易混淆字詞：suspect、doubt

返回正題，今日想教大家suspect和doubt的分別。大家知道以下句子的分別嗎?

1. I suspect that Mary killed her husband.
2. I doubt that Mary killed her husband.

簡單翻譯這兩個字，通常都會得出「懷疑」這個結果，但這兩個字的意思真的一樣嗎? 我們一起查查字典吧!

Part One: Suspect

首先講講suspect，解作「懷疑某事為真實的、確切發生了的等等」，而「某事」多為壞事。

Example One: I suspect that Mary killed her husband. (我懷疑Mary殺害了她的丈夫。)

以上一句是suspect + THAT + complete sentence。

接下來的一句是suspect + noun phrase

Example Two: Teachers should call social services if they suspect child abuse. (adapted from Macmillan Dictionary)
(老師如懷疑有虐待兒童個案，應尋求社工跟進。)

最後再介紹多一個suspect的常見用法：suspect + sb + OF + noun phrase / gerund

Example Three: I suspect Mary of murder.

Example Four: I suspect Mary of murdering her husband.
 



Part Two: Doubt

至於 doubt則「懷疑某事為假的、沒有發生過的、不可能發生的等等」。

這個字有兩個常見用法：
1.
doubt + THAT + complete sentence

Example One: I doubt that the government will be able to tackle this problem.
(我懷疑政府能否解決這問題。)

2. doubt + WHETHER / IF + complete sentence

Example Two: I doubt whether the government can tackle the problem.
(我懷疑政府能否解決這問題。)


答案：
1. I suspect that Mary killed her husband.
我懷疑Mary確實是殺害了她的丈夫。


2. I doubt that Mary killed her husband.
我懷疑Mary並沒有殺害她的丈夫。
