The Book of Virtues 是一本文選集(anthology)。編輯William. J Bennett是美國人，曾在老布殊時代任國家毒品控制政策辦公室主任，及後在列根時代任教育部長和國家人文基金會董事長。他也是作家，共編寫了十二本書。Book of Virtues 可說是他最有名的作品之一。此書有831頁，包含幾百個項目，內容豐富多樣，主要有民間故事，希臘神話，聖經故事，名人軼事，詩歌童謠等。編者編排內容時獨具心思，把全書分為十大章節，以不同美德(virtues)命名，它們分別是：
Self-discipline(自律)
Compassion(同理心)
Responsibility(責任)
Friendship(友誼)
Work(工作)
Courage(勇氣)
Perseverance(堅持)
Honesty(誠實)
Loyalty(忠誠)
Faith(信念)
每一個標題下內容都是由淺入深。Bennett 在序言解釋這樣做是有原因的。正如他說：
“The
early material in each chapter can be read aloud to, or even by, very young
children. As the chapter progresses greater reading and conceptual proficiency
are required. Nevertheless we urge younger readers to work their way through as
far as possible. As children grow older they can reach for the more difficult
material in the book. They can grow up (and perhaps even better!) with this
book.” 中譯：我們可以大聲對幼童朗讀每一章的前面部分，或者幼童自己可以朗讀這些部分。閱讀每一章的後面部分需要具備較熟練的閱讀和概念能力。雖然如此，我們仍敦促年輕的讀者盡力往後讀。當孩子較大時，他們可以閱讀書中較困難的部分。他們可以和這本書一起成長 (或許可以長得更好！)
請別以為這書須是要全部讀畢，這是浪費時間，而且沒有意義的。編者建議讀者在空閒時偶爾翻看一下，隨心閱讀就行了。他也希望家長和老師能參與其中，與青年讀者重新發現一些道德觀念並對之加以指導。正如他說: “It is my hope that parents
and teachers will spend some time wandering (v. 漫遊) through these pages,
discovering or rediscovering some moral landmarks (v.本解地標，這裡是指傳統觀念或既定原則), and in turn (adv.按順序; 依次; 逐個地) pointing them out to the young.”
我贊同他的看法。要鼓勵學生閱讀，家長和老師都應該出一份力。這本書的故事都是良好的德育教材，家長和老師應該和學生分享，令他們建立正確道德價值觀之外也可以提升英語水平，一舉兩得。
