球場上學英文：熱刺 2-4 車路士

10月20日，熱刺(Tottenham Hotspur)主場迎戰車路士(FC Chelsea)。這場賽事非常矚目，因為熱刺的領隊正好是在車路士的前任領隊：保亞斯(Andre Villas-Boas)。在賽事開始前，不少球迷都覺得這是保亞斯的復仇戰。

在英超上一季，保亞斯之所以獲得車路士球會僱用，是因為他曾經帶領波圖(FC Porto)贏得三項葡萄牙足球比賽，又勇奪歐霸盃冠軍。不過，加盟車路士後，保亞斯的魔力漸退，九個月後就遭「炒魷魚」了。

He had a successful spell at Porto, guiding them to three domestic trophies and the Europa League in his first season – but could not replicate the success at Chelsea, where he was sacked after nine months in charge.

以上的一段文字有幾個詞語值得介紹。第一個是spell，是名詞，解作「魔力」，亦可以解作「吸引力」、「影響力」等等。保亞斯年紀算輕，有這樣的成就當然會吸引到其他球會千方百計要僱用他。第二個字是replicate，是動詞，解作「複製」。車路左僱用保亞斯就是希望他能夠帶領車路士贏取英超冠軍、歐聯冠軍等等，就好像要保亞斯「複製」他的成功、成就。第三個字是sack，解作「開除」，是英式英文的口語，所以“You are sacked”等同“You are fired.”。

保亞斯轉投熱刺後，暫時的成績還算不錯，9月29日更以一分之微(3-2)在曼聯主場獲勝。10月20日是他第一次重遇車路士。熱刺雖有主場之利，但最後以2-4敗陣。

“A day of misery”是「悲痛的一天」：車路士下半場初段落後，卻於比賽臨完結前連入三球，贏了賽事，保亞斯當然傷心。“enthralling encounter”解作「非常有趣的相遇」；留意，這裡的encounter是名詞，確切意思是「偶然的或短暫的相遇」。白鹿徑(White Hart Lane)是熱刺的主場。

車路士上半場以1球領先，但熱刺在下半場初段一度以2-1反先：

Spurs, however, reversed fortunes dramatically at the start of the second half with two quick goals from William Gallas and Jermain Defoe.

「扭轉乾坤」，英文可以說成“reverse fortunes”；dramatically是副詞，能夠加強語氣。看來，熱刺能夠擊敗車路士，全取三分：

Tottenham boss Villas-Boas was facing Chelsea for the first time… and for a brief spell in the second half it looked like he would celebrate with three points.

“a brief spell in the second half”中的spell同樣是名詞，但不再解作「魔力」、「吸引力」或「影響力」，而是「短時間」(“a period of time, usually a short one”)。

賽事峰迴路轉：

The outstanding Juan Mata struck twice in three minutes… and substitute Daniel Sturridge's simple fourth in stoppage time completed a hugely satisfying performance...

車路士球員馬達(Juan Mata)三分鐘內轟進兩球，果然「厲害」。上文用了outstanding(傑出的；優秀的)來形容他，但要留意outstanding是放了在他的姓名前面，所以這個形容詞的前面需要加上“the”。strike應該是足球術語，解作score(入球)。史杜歷治(Daniel Sturridge)是後備球員(substitute)，在補時階段入了一球。stoppage time即是「加時」之意，又稱作injury time。上文用了“simple fourth”來形容他的入球，其中simple可以理解「平常」(“plain and without decoration”)，fourth的原意是「第四的」，這裡是隱藏了score，所以可能又是足球術語。最後想介紹的生字是hugely，解作「非常」：如果讀者想說某事物非常滿意(satisfying)，可以用hugely來取代very。

難得賽後沒有火藥味，保亞斯大讚車路士三名球員，各人「光芒四射」(individual brilliance)。不過，他似乎沒有提到車路士的新領隊迪馬堤奧(Roberto Di Matteo)，大概是有些妒忌吧﹗
